Abstract

Around the year 1180, Michael the Great, patriarch of Antioch of the Syrians (1166-1199) wrote to the copts of Egypt, upon their request, two books on the confession of sins in order to arbitrate the conflict between Ibn-al-Qunbar, a coptic priest promoter of private confession, and the coptic patriarch Mark III (1166-1189) along with the bishops of Lower Egypt who support the traditional confession over the censer. The first of two books of the patriarch of Antioch is a refutation of Ibn al-Qunbar's errors while the second is an apologetic defense of the private confession of sins addressed to the coptic bishops and people. External and internal indices allowed us to consider the "Book of [33] chapters" as the second of Michael the Great's two works, despite the opposite view of G. Graf who attributed it to an anonymous coptic author. The edition, translation and analysis of the book allowed us to highlight an original theological approach of the confession of sins in relation to the earlier syriac tradition. The author presents the confession of sins as an actualization of baptism lived in the relation of a disciple to a master, following the model of spiritual guidance as practiced in the eastern monastic tradition. Moreover, confession recapitulates in itself instruments of salvation that are defined by the christian tradition : humility, obedience, poverty in Spirit, returning to the childhood state, seeking advice, etc. In addition to these themes, like most arabic christian writings, the LC33 devotes the first chapter to the Trinity and the second one to Christ's economy of salvation. Biblical and patristic quotations which constitute almost two thrids of the book are a wealth of information for the study of the history of texts and arabic translations of the Church fathers as well as for the research of middle arabic.
